Frequently asked questions
Start with the SIE — it is open to the public with no firm sponsorship, and results stay valid for 4 years. Then take the representative exam your job requires (Series 6 or Series 7, both sponsor-required), pairing it with the NASAA state-law exam your role needs: Series 63, 65, or 66.
Two paths need no sponsor: the SIE, which anyone can register for, and the NASAA state-law exams (Series 63, 65, 66), which allow self-enrollment. The Series 6 and Series 7 require sponsorship by a FINRA member firm.
The SIE and Series 6 are $100 each, the Series 63 is $147, the Series 66 is $177, the Series 65 is $187, and the Series 7 is $395. Sponsoring firms often cover the fee; a retake means paying it again.
Pass rates run roughly 58% to 74%: the SIE passes about 74% of candidates and the Series 63 about 72%, while the Series 6 is the toughest of the set at about 58%. Drilling exam-style questions on the rules is what separates first-time passes from retakes.
